Frequently asked questions
What is my methodology?
I am a balanced and relationship-based dog trainer. Meaning my goal is to guide owners in creating enriching lives alongside their companions. Whether it's relishing leisurely walks, exploring off-leash adventures, savoring coffee shop or brewery outings, embarking on camping trips, or simply running errands together, I'm here to assist you in realizing your vision for your dog's role in your life. If nothing else, I aim to support you in setting and attaining practical goals and expectations.
While obedience is a component in every training method, I don't adhere solely to obedience training. My approach is specific to dog psychology, how the brain functions, fostering relationships, interpreting body language, and refining communication. I leverage all four quadrants of operant conditioning and guide you in establishing a fair, healthy, and balanced lifestyle for both you and your dog.
Where will our session be held?
I do not operate from a formal facility. All 1-on-1 sessions take place either in public spaces or in your home, depending on your dog’s needs and the goals we’re working toward.
Our initial session is typically held in-home, since most behavioral challenges begin where the dog lives and feels most comfortable. From there, session locations are selected based on the goals for the day—whether that means reinforcing structure at home, building focus in public, or practicing real-world exposure.
A travel fee applies for locations beyond 25 miles from central Reno-Sparks.
Do you have breed restrictions?
Absolutely not. All range of breeds and ages are welcomed at Simple K9. I specialize in reactive/anxious behavior with majority of my clientele. However I also specialize in aggression and fear based cases of all breeds and sizes.
What tools do you use?
I generally favor using slip leads for most dogs, although I might suggest other tools such as a prong collar for specific cases. Additionally, I incorporate food as a training tool and strongly support crate training and the responsible use of high-quality e-collars. I refrain from using harnesses, gentle leaders, or martingales as I've observed that they tend to be ineffective and can sometimes contribute to or reinforce undesirable behaviors. I do utilize the "figure 8" technique on the slip lead for simple pressure conversations with a dog.
What area do you provide services?
I’m based in the Reno-Sparks area and offer mobile dog training services throughout the region. I come to you—whether that’s your home, a local park, or another public space tailored to your dog’s needs.
A travel fee applies for locations more than 25 miles outside central Reno-Sparks. If you’re unsure whether your area is within range, feel free to reach out and I’ll be happy to confirm.
What will our first private lesson look like?
Our first private lesson will typically be held in the comfort of your home. During this initial session, we will establish a proper introduction, discuss long-term goals, and address any behavioral issues or questions you may have. This will include hands-on coaching and training.
For example, if your pup has trouble greeting guests at the front door, I'll coach both of you around door thresholds, providing extensive information about dog psychology and behavioral training to enhance your understanding and efforts in training. If needed, we can extend our sessions to include daily neighborhood walks, visits to your favorite coffee shop, or trail walks, ensuring we meet your pup’s goals and behavioral needs in various environments.
